The Fujitsu MHW2BK Series

Fujitsu Asia introduced the MHW2BK series of Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) hard disk drives (HDDs).
Made mainly for blade server, industrial, robotic, surveillance and telecommunications operations, the MHW2BK series of HDDs has been considered with a spindle speed of 7,200 revolutions per minute (rpm) and a maximum data rate of 3 gigabits per second (Gb/s).

The product line also incorporates features to decrease the adverse effects of rotational vibration (such as read or write failures) which may arise when multiple drives are mounted on a single chassis and rotated at high speeds, for increased operational stability.

Coolness!

Western Digital
has a new product and they have only recently launched it. It’s the WD Passport Portable which is a 320-Gbyte hard disk drive. It comes (so far) in black and weighs less than five ounces. It is a plug-and-play and lightweight Passport that connects to computers via USB port. It needs no power adapter (even if you can have one) since it is drawn from the USB bus. The WD Passport Portable also has available software for keeping files both in the Passport and the host computer in synch. This new gadget is aimed at people who need a portable backup device for large files such as music, video, and other data. This gadget is both PC and Apple Mac desktop and notebook compatible.

Another product unveiling here! Whew! Technology is really a fast-paced industry. I can hardly keep up with it!

Anyway, Seagate Technology LLC is to launch its updated Momentus laptop disk drive. The new Momentus 5400.4 version is 2.5 inches and has storage capacity of 160GB up to a maximum of 250GB. Not only that, the new version of the drive has a faster transfer rate of 3Gbit/sec definitely afar cry from 2006s Momentus 5400.3 which ran at 1.5Gbit/sec.

I guess this is Seagates attempt to bump off fierce competition from rivals (Western Digital Corp., Samsung Electronics Co., Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Fujitsu Computer Products of America Inc. and Toshiba Corp.,). Brrr Competition is indeed fierce if you take that into consideration!

Hard-Disk-Drive Motor Controller

One of the worldwide leaders in disk drive and system-on-chip solutions, STMicroelectronics, has announced that they will release a motor-control chip for hard-disk drives (HDD). This chip is intended specially for “enterprise- level HDD applications.”

The new controller can do without external regulators for varying voltages that are usually required by the drive. In other words, it is highly efficient and suitable for demanding high level HDD applications. The controller called the L7220 has the latest version of Smooth Drive(R) pseudo-sinusoidal digital-drive technique which is exclusively developed by ST. This minimizes acoustic noise from the spindle motor among other things. The L7220 will be fully out by mid 2008 but evaluation samples are now available at $15,000
